About The Western Suns

Michael Ward

Born and raised in Toledo, Ohio, Michael’s passion for music ignited when he picked up the clarinet in 7th grade. Throughout high school, he showcased his talent in both band and orchestra. In 1965, fate bestowed upon him a Harmony guitar, sparking his journey as a self-taught musician performing in local Toledo establishments.

Relocating to California in 1977, Michael’s musical pursuits faced a lull until 1986 when he found solace in playing for the music ministry, a role he embraced until 2000. Fast forward to 2017, and Michael reignited his guitar skills, dedicating countless hours to honing his craft. By early 2020, he fearlessly took to open mics around Ventura, California, where serendipity introduced him to the talented John Cater.

However, their blossoming partnership was met with a cruel twist as the world was struck by the wrath of Covid, abruptly halting live performances. Undeterred, Michael launched “Creative Covers,” a captivating live video broadcast that garnered a global audience for nearly three years. Alongside their weekly practice sessions and unwavering commitment to open mics, Michael and John are now actively seeking venues that will elevate their remarkable performances.

The story of Michael’s musical journey is one of resilience, dedication, and an unwavering passion for the craft. With each note they play, they aspire to touch hearts and leave an indelible mark on the world of music.

John Cater

John’s musical journey began in Santa Cruz, California, where he immersed himself in the vibrant local music scene, honing his skills by performing and hosting at various open mic nights. His undeniable talent and dedication led to a notable achievement when he secured 7th place in a prestigious local songwriting contest. Furthermore, his artistry caught the attention of Sleepy John, the host of the local KPIG radio show, “Please Stand By,” where he was featured, showcasing his unique songs to a wider audience.

Relocating to Oxnard, California, John’s passion for music remained unwavering. He became an integral part of the Ventura County music community when he took over hosting the open mic at the Sandbox Coffee House in Ventura. For two years, he curated an inviting and supportive environment for local musicians to share their talents and foster creativity. And then, Covid-19 happened.

Undeterred by the challenges posed by the pandemic, John adapted to the circumstances and embarked on a new venture. He launched a live 30-minute Facebook broadcast called “Live @ Five,” entertaining his audiences every Friday for approximately three years. This innovative endeavor not only provided a platform for his music but also allowed him to connect with fans and supporters in a time of social distancing.

Fate brought John together with Michael Ward when they crossed paths at a local open mic. Recognizing their shared musical vision and chemistry, the duo began meeting and playing together on a regular basis. After a year of dedicated practice and refinement, John and Michael made the bold decision to take their musical partnership on the road. Since then, they have been captivating audiences and leaving an indelible mark on the local music scene with their engaging performances and stage presence.
